UOG Presidential Lecture Series Features Rear Admiral Bette Bolivar

  
Bolivar to speak about “Giving Back, Making a Difference”


(Mangilao, Today) University of Guam President Dr. Robert A. Underwood invites the community to the 24th presentation of the Presidential Lecture Series featuring Rear Adm. Bette Bolivar, Commander, Joint Region Marianas, Commander, U.S. Naval Forces Marianas, U.S. Defense Representative to Guam, Commonwealth of the Northern, Mariana Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, and Republic of Palau.

The presentation will be held at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, October 27at the College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences (CLASS) Lecture Hall at the University of Guam.

Rear Adm. Bette Bolivar will address the University of Guam community to share her life experiences and journey from becoming a Navy Sailor to rising through the ranks. She comes from a long line of military service and has applied her values of treating people right, upholding honesty, loyalty and teamwork which have made her successful throughout her career. She believes that when these morals are applied to any aspect of life, there is never room for failure. 

About Rear Adm. Bolivar
Rear Adm. Bolivar was born in Honolulu. She is a graduate of the United States Naval Academy, where she received a Bachelor of Science degree in Oceanography. She holds a Master of Science in Management from Troy State University.

She has served as the commanding officer of USS Salvor and of Naval Weapons Station Yorktown and Navy Munitions Command East Division. She served as the chief of staff for Commander Navy Installations Command and most recently as commander, Navy Region Northwest. Bolivar assumed command of Joint Region Marianas August 2014.

She has been recognized as a Chief of Naval Operations’ Pacific Fleet Finalist for the Vice Adm. James Stockdale Leadership Award. She was also inducted into the Women Divers Hall of Fame.

Welcome to the 27th Annual Regional Language Arts Conference (LAC) website!  The LAC is an annual event in which Western Pacific educators are provided with opportunities for professional growth and enrichment in literacy.
This year's Keynote Speaker:

Dr. Margaruite Smith
Dr. Smith is the Manager of Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA), Hawaii and Pacific Sales and Service for McGraw-Hill Education. In that capacity, she is responsible for all aspects of teacher training, textbook and online learning sales, as well as Professional Development services for McGraw-Hill School Education educational materials, including SRA, Macmillan, Glencoe and Wright Group products to the Department of Defense Schools and to Guam, Marshall Islands, Palau, Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas, Federated States of Micronesia, American Samoa, and Hawaii. 
She has degrees from Texas Tech University, Texas Southern University, and the University of Denver in education and in educational administration. She has taught in every grade level 1-12, and has been an elementary administrator. She has teacher certification in reading, English as a Second Language, as well as general studies K-12.
Featured Presentation:  Unlocking Literacy with the Common Core State Standards
This session will highlight the Common Core Anchor Standards that address literacy achievement for all students.  The session will address the benefits of using the CCSS in planning English Language Arts instruction to assure mastery of essential foundation skills for literacy.  Dr. Smith will show examples of teaching lessons based on the Common Core State Standards and address quality assessment that is critical to effective instruction.

Past Featured Keynote Speaker: Dr. Nerissa Bretania Underwood
Dr. Nerissa Bretania Underwood is a former Superintent for the Guam Department of Education (GDOE).  She served as GDOE's research, planning, and evaluation administrator.  She holds a doctorate of philosophy from the University of Oregon, a master's degree in education, and a bachelor of arts degree in education.  She has also served as the chair of the committee to develop Guam Department of Education's master plan relative to the increase in military presence.  Dr. Underwood has been a leader in the local Filipino community organizations and an advocate of Guam's quest for self-determination and has served the community as a member of the Guam Memorial Hospital's board of trustees, the Guam Humanities Council, and St. Paul Christian School's board of directors.  She is also the vice chair of the Democratic Party of Guam.

Past Featured Keynote Speaker: Efren Penaflorida, CNN Hero of the Year
Penaflorida is a Filipino teacher who won the 2009 CNN Hero of the Year award for his outreach teaching project known as, "Kariton Klasrum" (pushcart classroom).  He received his award from American actress Eva Mendes at the Kodak Theater in Hollywood.

According to Penaflorida, "Our planet is filled with heroes, young and old, rich and poor, man, woman of different colors, shapes, and sizes.  We are one great tapestry...Each person has a hidden hero within, you just have to look inside you and search it in your heart, and be the hero to the next one in need."

The 2014 International Conference on TEAM is an interdisciplinary forum that invites scholarly interactions among academics, researchers, practitioners, administrators and students.  This conference that is organized by UOG Research, Graduate Studies and Sponsored Programs in collaboration with partner institutions in the Philippines is scheduled for October 24, 25 and 26. 
Deadline for submission of abstracts in the following sub-themes is on June 30, 2014.  The abstract of not more than 250 words will be peer reviewed and results will be emailed to senders after two weeks.  Email your abstracts to the contact persons below.

PIBBA Webmaster Conducts Literacy Presentation at CL Taitano Elementary School

It is always a pleasure to be able to make a difference in the lives of our students.  PIBBA Webmaster, Dr. Matilda Naputi Rivera, conducted a family literacy presentation at the Raising Readers Workshop held October 4, 2014 at CL Taitano Elementary School.  The workshop was meaningful, as parents were actively engaged in the process.  Kudos to the organizers of the workshop!  Si Yu'os Ma'ase'!

Condolences for Cira McMillan

Cira McMillan

The PIBBA family extends its deepest condolences and sympathies to the family of Cira McMillan who passed away today at Paradise Valley Hospital in San Diego.  She is a traditional storyteller and former Guam Department of Education teacher.  She was also a FESTPAC delegate to the 1996 Western Samoa FOPA.  She will always be remembered. God Bless her and her family. May she rest in peace.
